Infrared wavelengths fall just below visible red light in the spectrum. Short wave infrared, the frequencies closest to visible red, have no known effect, although some are suspected in the area of vision and effects on the thymus, a gland just behind the forehead.

Long-wave infrared is known as heat. Most of us know the effects from having stood out in the sun. Too much heat, and you're toast. That pretty much covers it.

People who work in industries where they are exposed to infrared radiation for long periods of time may experience eye damage. People who work near intense radiation must wear goggles. This is why staring at the sun for long is harmful

As with anything the danger depends on dose received.
  • a low dose of IR keeps you warm in the winter
  • a medium dose of IR cooks a steak well done
  • a high dose of IR will catch your house on fire
  • etc.

major exposure can burn you- but it isn't really anything to worry about is you are living a normal life. You can always protect yourself with shielding, and skin graftes can repair it
