Basically a microwave uses microwave radiation which is absorbed by the molecules of water and other substances within the food causing them to "shake" and heat up the food.

An oven puts a heat source outside of the food and raises the temperature from the outside to the inside of that food.

Ovens are quite hefty in size and are not as compact.Microwave uses dielectric heating, which causes the polarised molecules.Cooking time is greater in conventional ovens.Microwave ovens take the least amount of time to heat up food. It can also cook food under 5 minutes.

A Grill Microwave Oven has a grill placed inside the cavity of oven which helps in browning and crisping of the food. This grill is not present in a Solo Microwave Oven. Hence Solo Microwave Ovens are only capable of reheating the food and for general cooking. Grill Microwave Oven is used for preparing crisp food items.

A convection microwave uses the fan to move the air like your big convection oven underneath the gas stove/electric range. You can bake and roast using the convection feature.

A microwave with a grill has the electric rod on the microwave ceiling.

I am myself not aware of the application differences and am searching for it. However, I know for sure that neither are replacement for toaster.

Microwaving does not apply radiant heat to foods. All forms of grilling do apply radiant heat to foods. The results will be totally different in flavour, texture, colour and finish, so your choice of microwave or grill will depend on the end product you wish to achieve.

A steak, for example, would be unsuitable for microwaving, while fish can be microwaved successfully.
