How are misdemeanor classed?

Answer:
A misdemeanor is any crime in which the maximum punishment is imprisonment not exceeding one year in jail.

Added: In certain states Misdemeanor offenses (and even some felonies) are graded by "Class" (e.g.: Class a - CLass B - etc) and specifically define WHAT the offense consists of and what the maximum sentence can be for that specific crime).
