They were both painted by French artists. Oath of the Horatii is painted in the neoclassical style depicting Roman honor. The Pilgrimage to Cythera was very different from it because it was more frivolous.

The two paintings are very different in subject matter, the first depicting preparation for battle and the second love. However, both paintings incorporate Roman mythology. The Oath of Horatii is based on a Roman Legend about three brothers fighting for Rome, and Pilgrimage to Cythera includes a statue of Venus, Roman goddess of love, and is set on an island said to be her birthplace.
