It is actually caused by the tilting of the earth. When the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun, it is spring/summer. As the tilt becomes away from the sun, it is autumn and winter.

∙ 13y agoIn brief, the seasons are due to the tilt of the earth on its axis. Broadly speaking, when the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun, the Southern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun and it is summer in the north and winter in the south (and vice versa). Variations in between account for spring and autumn. The equator does not experience seasonal changes because its "tilt" towards the sun does not vary.
In summer, the poles (north or south, depending on the hemisphere) are permanently tilted towards the sun (and in constant daylight); during the winter months, they are permanently tilted away from the sun (and in constant darkness).
Although the earth has an elliptical or oval orbit around the sun (and therefore its distance from the sun varies depending on its position on the ellipse), it is the tilt of the earth which is responsible for the seasons, not its distance from the sun on the ellipse.
