Viruses can be good for the immune system as they enable the body to produce the antibodies for your body to fight the infection. The antibodies will also help the body to fight the infection should you contract the same type of virus again.

In general, viruses are "bad", but they can be put to good practical use.

The way a virus works is to invade a cell and introduce a piece of DNA or RNA. The virus then coerces the cell into creating the proteins encoded by that DNA or RNA.

While this is often a bad thing, a virus can be modified to introduce helpful DNA or RNA. For example, many diseases are caused by either the inability to produce a protein or the inability to produce a properly working version of the protein. In Gene Therapy, a virus can be modified to introduce DNA or RNA that can be used to create the needed protein (or proteins) and correct the problem.

The virus infects and kills cells when it reproduces. When the immune system sees the virus and the fragments of dead cells it responds by producing free antibodies and bound antibodies attached to killer T cells. When the bound antibodies recognize infected cells the killer T cells kill the infected cells to suppress further viral reproduction. Free antibodies bind free virus particles into inert clumps to stop further infection.

So the viral infection damages the body two ways: directly and indirectly via the immune response. Often the indirect damage caused by the immune system is more severe than the direct viral damage.
