Volcanoes are either active dormant or extinct.

1. Active- it shows eruptions within 50 years

2. Dormant- it enters a long period of rest and erupts violently. The longer it rests, the more violent the eruption may be.

3. Extinct- it doesn't show records of eruptions within the past thousand years. It is hard to tell if a volcano is dormant or completely extinct.
