Weight-bearing exercise is physical activity in which
muscles and
tendons apply tension to
bones, stimulating them to produce more bone tissue. Your own body weight can create this tension, as can equipment such as handheld weights or gym machines. Examples of weight-bearing exercise include:
- Running, jogging, walking
- Weight-lifting or strength-training exercises (such as push-ups)
- Sports that involve running and/or throwing (such as basketball, tennis, baseball, volleyball)
- Gymnastics
Weight-bearing exercise is beneficial in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.
