Indian elephants are essentially creatures of shady forests. They don't have to endure the high temperatures that African elephants encounter on their sunburnt grasslands, so they do not need such large ears.

Asian female elephants are around 8,000 pounds and are eight feet tall. Asian male elephants grow to be around 10,000 pounds and are about 9 feet tall.
