The Mustard Seed
The mustard seed grows rapidly, and was introduced to North America by the Spanish, who (it is said) sowed it along their trails so that the seed would spring up (full height 1' - 2') and leave a golden trail of it's four lobed flowers for them to follow in their return. The mustard seed is an annual herb, which grows like a weed. The mustard seed does NOT grow into a tree.
There is a deep significance to Matthew 13:31-32, where Jesus says that "The kingdom of heaven is like unto a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof."
Like the parable Jesus spoke immediately before and after this one, this parable is about the Kingdom of Grace--the Church (the kingdom of the heavens) - the Body of Believers on this Earth, indwelt by the Holy Spirit. The Word of God (Christ) is the mustard seed, the sower is God the Father. This seed is planted in Israel (the garden). This Seed becomes a tree (The Tree of Life), and becomes a lodging place for the birds of the air (Gentiles who will become inheritors of the Kingdom of Grace.) These are not the same birds that Jesus spoke of in Matthew 13:4 - those who came and devoured the seed that fell by the wayside. These birds are making nests in the Tree of Life.
The significance: God the Father sowed the Word (His Son) into human flesh so that all who believe in Him may find rest and eternal life.
