The total size of Antarctica is 14 million sq. kilometers. When the Southern Ocean sea ice freezes, its "(total) size" increases to 20 million sq kilometers over the winter, because the sea ice joins with the ice sheet that covers 98% of the continent.

Land Area: 5.1 million square miles
Coastline Length: 11,165 miles

Antarctica is the fifth-largest continent, having an area of around 14,000,000 sq km (5.4 million sq miles). Of this, 280,000 sq km is ice-free while 13.72 million sq km is covered by ice, which is about 98% of the surface.

Another source lists the 13.72 million sq km as the total size, while not including 1.5 million km2 of ice shelves and the glaciers that calve icebergs into the sea.

Antarctica is 13,900,000 sq km14.0 million km² / 5.4 million sq miles

A few benchmarks for comparison:

Antarctica is ...

-- about 2.7% of the Earth's total surface area

-- about 40% larger than Canada

-- about 44% larger than China

-- a little less than double the size of Australia

-- about 7.1 times the size of Mexico

-- about 14 times the size of Egypt

-- about 27.7 times the size of Spain
The continent measures 14 million km² or 5.405 million sq miles.
Antarctica is the fifth largest continent -- covering about 10% of the earth's surface, measuring about 14.0 million square kilometres (5.4 million square miles).

It's not round of course, so there is no such thing as an "accurate" diameter.

The shortest distance across the continent is roughly along the 30 deg E meridian - this is about 3000km.

The longest distance is from the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula (at about 60 deg W) to the opposite side. This is about 6000km.

Note that North, South, East and West have no meaning in Antarctica. Everything is north!

Comparing Antarctic to other land masses, it is about twice the size of either the contiguous states of the USA or Australia. In absolute terms it is 14,000,000 square kilometres (5,400,000 square miles), and the fifth largest continent.

Antarctica covers 10% of the earth's surface and measures more than 5.405 million sq miles (14 million km²). That's about as much land as USA and Mexico combined.

Antarctica is roughly 5.4 million square miles (14 million square kilometers) in size, and that's with all of its ice. There are only around 1,000 people living there!
