The Romans started working and dawn and finished at noon. After that many of them spent a couple of hours at the public baths. Then they had dinner before dusk. They daily life was regulated by sunlight. Therefore, they had a different system of measuring the day. Because daylight was longer in summer days, the hours in the summer lasted 1 1/2 hours. In the shorter winter days, the hours lasted 45 minutes.

The daily life of the Romans also depended on wealth. Rich Romans lived a life of opulence. Poor Romans struggled to survive and many of them relied on a free grain dole distributed by the state. They also lived on the upper floors of the insulae, apartment block 6-7 story high. They live in overcrowded rooms with no running water, sanitation or cooking facilities. They went there only to sleep and lived their lives outdoors. They ate at outdoors outlets, went to outdoor public toilets and to the public baths. This is part of the reasons why the baths were so important in Rome. They also went to wine bars where they played Board Games, gampled with dice and got drunk.
