If your parents have refused to get you a horse (join the club, mine are the same) you have to think seriously about whether they have a good reason. Depending on what you want the horse for, a quiet horse suitable for a beginner to ride will cost around 1-2 thousand dollars. This isn't too hard to save up.

However, there are a lot of ongoing costs involved with keeping a horse. Every six weeks or so, you will have to have the farrier visit to put shoes on it, an expense of a hundred dollars or so. If it won't have access to a paddock for the majority of its time, you wil have to pay for hay. The more riding you do, the more concentrates you will have to feed it, and these are expensive. If you are a beginner, you can ruin your confidence and a good horse by trying to ride without instruction. Riding lessons aren't cheap. Your horse will need a vet checkup (costing about 300 dollars minimum) once a year, and if it gets sick the vet fees will be much higher.

If you don't have somewhere to keep the horse, your biggest expense will be board. You will have to pay to put the horse in a stable. If you can't be there every day to turn it out, bring it in, exercise it by riding or longing, feed it twice and muck out its stall, you will have to pay additional fees for the grooms to do this for you. If you intend to keep it in a paddock that you own, you will need to ensure that the fences are stable, and that the horse will have shelter and a supply of drinking water, as well as removing toxic plants.

Before you even consider buying the horse, you need to think about how you will cover all the additional expenses that come with owning a horse. If you are too young to have a part time job, like I am, it will be very difficult to keep up with these expenses unless you can get your parents to pay part of them.

If you are convinced that you can cover the expenses of having a horse, or your parents will offer to pay some of the horse's upkeep, there are many ways that a teenager or child can earn money. I'm thirteen and too young to look for a part time job. If you aren't, get one. Save up all your pocket money. If your parents give you money to buy food from the canteen at school, buy the cheapest food that they offer or bring lunch and save the money they gave you. Knock on doors in your neighbourhood and ask for odd jobs to do - there are a LOT of nice old ladies who will pay you twenty bucks to sweep the porch. Save everything you get. Put it in the bank to accumulate interest, don't stick it in a jar on your desk.

Good luck - but please don't rush into horse ownership. It isn't fair to you or the horse to buy it and then realise six months down the track, when it is sick, skinny and timid, that you can't really afford to look after it. Horses don't like being constantly sold on.

I pick plums every summer and seell them, I wash cars, and (you can copy this too) I have a "Thing Machine" I put a ton of stuff that I want to sell in my brother's wagon and on the first day, I go everywhere in the neighborhood, knock on doors and whatever.
