The BEST protection for the person who wants to give shelter to a runaway is to contact Child Protective Services and report that the child is with you and the circumstances of why they ran away or was kicked out. Also, contact an Attorney to learn your rights and responsibilities.

Technically, you cannot be charged with harboring a runaway if the person has not been classifed as a runaway. However, if the person is found in your possession and they have no reason to be with you, then the police have every reason to question you.
