You're your own victim. Stop taking on so much in your perceived competition which is only with yourself. You only need to publish a few (2-3) good papers a year. Take a holiday. Academia will roll on without you...in fact if you chill out no one will probably notice. If academia is all too much, maybe just quit and take a day-job. You're only trying to make yourself feel important by all this striving to achieve.

Otherwise, just master the switch on, switch off.

(this is not an answer, it's just info about my question..) I'm currently studying English Lit, Art, and I.T. in a sixth form college. It just feels like there's no future, and I'm just going to fail. There's so much stress, and I don't know how to deal with it. How can I forget my worries, and get away from this depression?

A mixture of things: Start early, get lots of sleep and keep active (these help more than you would imagine), take breaks (make time to watch TV or read or go on Facebook etc, if your study sessions are too long they are actually useless. When you feel yourself losing concentration, take a break, do something different, to stop yourself associating studying with boredom. But of course this can't be watching a 2 hour movie in between each 40 minute study session.) You need to be motivated enough to put in the hours when you really need them (feeling short on time, and yes, stress itself, is a great motivation to work hard). Worst of all is wasting your time with ineffective study methods. They're boring, take time and get you nowhere, contributing hugely to stress. Try out different techniques until you find one that works, (reading aloud to yourself, trying to explain the concepts to your grandma, flash cards, making posters, walking around the garden while reciting information etc). Once you've found the one that works for you, as long as you've started early enough, you'll be able to soak up the info quickly and effectively, leaving plenty of time to chill, sleep and exercise which will do wonders for your stress levels :) Hope this has helped.
