Many, perhaps most, accidents could be prevented by changing peoples' attitudes to it and making teaching more thorough.

Most people eroneously think that once they have passed their test they know how to drive.

The fact is that once one has passed that initial test there is an infinity still to learn, and learning about driving should continue throughout one's life.

To be able to drive on the public highways is a privilege, not a right. A privilege which may be enjoyed so long as one observes the rules.

There's a much better chance of doing that if one understands the reason for those rules, and this is where education is so important, but sadly so overlooked.

There is sound reason for introducing periodic re-tests once one has been awarded that first pass.

Also, in some countries there is a, so far, voluntary, advanced driving test.

Most drivers in most countries never get good enough to pass this unless they have a mature attitude towards the skill and art of safe driving and are willing to have their driving assessed and apply suggested corrections to bad habits.

One advantage of these schemes, is knowing that having passed an advanced test, not only are you are considered to be safer than the average driver, membership of a body such as the Institute of Advanced Motorists, in the U.K., will qualify you for discounted insurance. You are are far better risk.
