The nerves in the cochlea pick up sounds and converts them to electric impulses for the brain. To those nerves, noises are actually pulses of energy and the nerves can only tolerate certain levels of energy before they start to fail. It doesn't happen all at once, but nerve deafness is inevitable if you're around loud sounds for extended periods of time.
The different parts of our bodies have the ability to regenerate and heal, but repeated or extreme damage can cause scar tissue which doesn't function well for anything except covering a hole. Good luck. Hope you haven't experienced too much nerve damage yet.
