I totally understand your condition if though I am not a medical doctor. I strongly recommend you take measures to stop using medications. Though it would serve your needs, I am not saying you should stop taking them right now. Psychiatry wants you on a drug since it is constant income with a marvellous profit margin.
It is possible you should only take some high doses of certain vitamin to treat ADD which is by the way a disease that should have never been labeled a disease since effective treatments for the vaguely defined symptoms of ADD have been known for decades.
I suggest you check out Dr. Matthias Rath's website at DrRath and find out more about the issue.
Wishing you well,

Don't do it. Psychiatric pills are poisonous. The benefits don't last long. Get counseling from someone who doesn't believe in psychiatric drugs.

First of All, don't listen to those scientologist BS people who say shrinks and drugs are evil. It sounds as if you may be using this drug to stay up, but If you are legit, and have a clinical diagnosis, than what you need to do is find a doctor who specializes in ADD, (this will take some time, trust me) and simply let them know how it helped and that you want function in society as best you can, then if they don't take you seriously, find another shrink. More unmedicated ADD people have drug problems than the opposite. I've been on every antidepressant, I'm ready to try stimulants, everyone responds to something differently , good luck. And ADD IS a medical condition with very specific tests and characterics and not a "designer disease" as scientologists will have you believe. Some people don't need meds, others do. Good Luck. Just be honest a good doctor will truly want to help you and not cover his butt at your expense.

Beware of any advice that claims conspiracy theories, that all medication is evil, bad, etc.
I was taking Dexedrine (dextrostat) for several years for my ADD, and it worked well initially. It does have some very serious side effects that are poorly documented and most of the doctors who prescribe it are woefully ignorant of. It can cause you to experience a consistent feeling of invulnerability, you feel anything is possible and relaistic for you to do or accomplish, which adds up to greatly affecting your decisions, choices and every aspect of your life. It is very subtle, you are aware of it but it is such a change from the negative effects of ADD that in my case I embraced it and told myself this was simply what "nomral" people feel like, a level playing field, etc. It also begins to fail as an effective ADD treatment pretty quickly, as your body develops an immunity or resistance to it, and increasing dosage is very risky to your heart, liver, major organs as it creates high-blood pressure and is a salt-based drug. Also, increasing dosage usually does not restore the desired effect and only creates elevated tension, feelings of despair, depression, and even psychosis.
I agree emphatically with you that Stratera and the array of other medications can be amazingly ineffective and doctors tend to guniea pig you to no end. Remember, doctors will default to taking 100% control of every visit or issue, and it is your job to show up well-informed, be respectful and polite but it is YOUR body, not the doctors and you are PAYING them for results and not to be an extended experiment. Do not assume ANY doctor just knows what is best for you and do not automatically give away control of your medical issues, as most people foolishly do. Also, do not allow doctors to punish you for others who may abuse the medication or for thier own issues with DEA or board fears. Be up front about why you are making the appointment and ask if this is a drug this doctor has prescribed for ADD, noting that you have had difficulty getting the treatement you need due to the nature of the medication. You should be able to find ths out before even going - if not, dont waste your time with that doctor. When you go, be firm, without appearing desperate or over-anxious and KNOW YOUR FACTS. Emphasize that you would like to follow-up visit in a few weeks to review the results with the doctor, let them know you value thier expertise and politely insist they value your experience with other medications. Explain in detail what the effects were or were not from other medications and emphasize that you simply cannot and will not continue being experiemented with as it is expensive and affecting your quality of life. Most doctors will be more receptive if you have been on this medication before and had good results, provided you have no existing history of abuse or physical conditions that prvevemt your safely taking Dexedrine.
You are responsible for you and no moral or abuse advice here is going to prevent you or cause you to do right or wrong. Just be

You will find a number of physicians who will prescribe stimulant medications for ADD/ADHD without questioning the validity of its use for your situation. I would caution you against starting this spiral of eventual addiction, one that will cost you $$$$, mask "normalcy", and have you doing things you would probably never have done before (making wind chimes out of lamp parts at 3:00 am). Also, the use of Dextrostat (and others) will develop a tolerance in your body over time, until what was originally was prescribed will only last for a couple of hours (I was taking up to 15-16 tablets of Dextrostat per day!). Adult ADHD is mostly a myth. I am now 3 years free from Dextrostat, back into a 9-5 job, and rebuilding my life that this medication took from me for over 4 years.
Answer-
First you have to find the right Dr. that is an expert in the field of ADD/ADHD. And who believes in meds. Call around and ask! I am blessed to be on Adderall XR for a year and a half. (a close relative of Dextrostat) It has helped me incredibly. Everyone has different needs and besides helping me focus on things that help me. Adderall XR got me completely off of antidepressents as well! good luck with your search:)And to YOU too:)
