The NYU mascot is the bobcat. It was introduced in 1984. The mascot prior to this was the violet, introduced in 1983.
Mascots are needed to represent the emblem on the banner of the team name.

well, you try out with all the hot cheerleaders and then hopefully you become one! also if you do make sure you get to see the cheerleaders with their tops off :P
