Generally 4 to 5 years of study at a college or university with an Engineering program, which includes a lot of math and sciences courses and many labs. You would most likely have to complete internships and co-op programs to inhance your learning. its simple but hectic. its also involves some design work and administration skills. all you need is to go and consult a university for the academia.. and the rest is upto you. its a responsible job. as it relates with lives. do take this study seriously or leave it. i am also a civil engineer! so trust me! Your first year will be general maths and physics, maybe a computer programming course, and most likely Drafting and/or Surveying. Second and third years you will take more maths courses, and you'll start courses in "structural analysis" (e.g. finding forces in the different members of frames and trusses). More complicated structures require more complicated analysis methods, which is why you took all that funky math in 1st & 2nd years! You will also start to get some courses in the properties of different materials (wood, steel, concrete) and how they behave under load. Likely there will be a lab or two on the subject, and these are usually quite fun. At this point you will also get some "Introduction to Design" courses where you start to match up the "Analysis" courses (finding loads and forces) with the properties of load carrying materials. In fourth year you will do specific courses in Steel Design, Concrete Design, maybe Wood Design, introducing you to the codes and standards required by law. There will likely also be courses in Construction Management and Ethics. If you have a choice, choose a co-op program: a lot of things like cost estimating and spec writing that you need as an engineer are not taught well or even at all in school. You will see them only on the job, and the sooner the better. Everyone knows that, of course, which is why you require a few years of work experience before you write the exams for your Province or State Licensing body to become a fully licensed Professional Engineer. It is a very rewarding profession---good luck with your studies!

One becomes a civil engineer by completing a Bachelor of Engineering or a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. This takes on average four to five years. Prospective Civil Engineering students are expected to have completed the basic educational requirements (ie. High School), have a strong fundamental understanding of Science and Mathematics, and posses a strong study and work ethic.

After completion of a Civil Engineering Degree, one must take the Fundamental Engineering Exam (FE). As with many other engineers, this test must be taken and will cover many of the basics of what has been studied over the college career. After one has "apprenticed" for a firm long enough, they are capable of taking their Professional Engineering Exam (PE). Now you are considered a Professional Engineer and may consult as one. This takes on average 7-8 years from High School Graduate to Professional Engineer.

A civil engineer must be able to travel extensively to work sites. Must be very exact in their work. Errors could create serious safety hazards for users of the structures they design. Make decisions that strongly impact their coworkers and company. Meet strict deadlines weekly. Can make most decisions and set most tasks without consulting a supervisor. Work both indoors and outdoors. Are sometimes exposed to contaminants when working on environmental projects. Are sometimes exposed to very hot or cold temperatures when visiting job sites. Often work around hazardous equipment such as excavators, cranes, and drill rigs. Often work from a van or car while at project sites. Sometimes work inside a building without heat or air conditioning. Have a moderate level of social contact.

Civil Engineers work half of the time with other engineers and department staff, but spend time alone analyzing data and planning designs. Are often placed in conflict situations. Clients and engineers may disagree over the direction of projects. Deal with unpleasant, angry, or rude people monthly. Are greatly responsible for the work done by others. This is especially true for engineers when they sign final plans and reports. Work with a team that may include other engineers and scientists, field staff, and clerical staff. Communicate daily with coworkers by telephone and in person. Write letters, e-mails, and reports weekly.

1. A deep cut of height 12m having side slope of 1.5:1 (horizontal:vertical) intersects plane of contact of two strata at a height of 2m above base of cut. The plane of contact of the two strata makes an angle 120 with horizontal. The lower stratum is less pervious than the upper one. The soil of the upper stratum is having unit weight of 1.9 t/m3 with level ground surface. The values of c and f between the two strata are 0.25 kg/cm2 and 150 respectively. Check whether a slide is likely to occur along the plane of contact between two strata. If a slide is not likely to occur, find out factor of safety against sliding. (14)
