The first thing to ensure that you are running the NIC on the client at Full Duplex and also ensure that the switch that you are using to connect to the server is running a Gibabit NOC and running 1000SX and not running 100TX

Server - At least two Gigabit network cards. Team the network cards up so that they act as one.

Network - A managed Gigabit switch. Use port aggregation where the server network cards are connected.

XP workstation - Gigabit network card.
