1. Be as prepared as possible.

This varies in every situation. Often, it means practice. Sometimes in helps to make note cards. Always go in with a clear idea of what you want to say, and make sure you present this clear idea as soon as possible so that people will understand where you are coming from.

2. Fake it.

Lots of people hate public speaking but have learned how to fake like they are perfectly comfortable. I generally try to make sure I am dressed in a confident manner. I smile, and make good initial eye contact (later, when I focus on the speech, I generally can get away with looking at peoples foreheads, which is less intimidating). Also, remove the temptation of nervous gestures. If you flip your hair, tie it back. If you shuffle note cards, use a single sheet of paper instead. If you play with your hands, hold on to the podium.

3. Think outside the box.

Maybe public speaking isn't you strongest suit, but there is something else you probably do very well. If you are artistic and create a poster or technological and make a slide show, you have something for the audience to focus on other than you. This isn't always an options, but if you really hate an oral presentation, it might help to have something to talk about or to show off.

4. Pick your poison.

Probably, if you are asked to give an oral presentation on something, it is because you know or were assigned to find out about the topic in great detail. Slant the topic to an aspect you feel passionately about. It's easier to talk about an more fun for the reader.

5. Get a routine.

When I shoot foul shots, I'm usually a bit nervous, so I have a routine to get me calmed down and focused. For public speaking, sometimes it is enough to just take a few calm breaths, but I have a friend with an aura-cleansing routine that she loves. Just do it when you're out of sight, and march on out there with confidence.
