You can't do it on your own, or at least you shouldn't; making a comic goes beyond just drawing. You need to have concept art, then you need to put it to ink, then you have to do the coloring, and of course there is the delicate process of stenceling bubbles. It is possible to do it all on your own, but its very time consuming, and increasingly the supplies are becoming more and more expensive. Also, in this age of computers, computers are playing more and more of a role in comic books; before the computers we use today were the stuff of Science Fiction. For example, the desktop you are now using, is probably more powerful than the computer the 1950's Batman used. Of course the modern Batman has something probably more powerful than anything used at NASA, but, making a point, not long ago all this was science fiction. Not long ago, for saying there would be internet, wireless communication, etc, most people would label you a whack job. People got online on a massive scale barely over a decade ago for example.
In other words, as computers feature more prominently, you need to keep pace, and developing the concept for different types of computers is becoming increasingly difficult. Of course it depends what comic book you are doing. Starting your own comic book, again, you will need to assemble a team of loyal people, who will do it for the love first, and are willing to share the profits. Also, to get people's attention your artwork needs to be unique, your skill truly uncommon. There are so many poorly paid artists out there, yet so few people willing to do art for a living, that in Marvel and D.C. there are always job openings.
In Video Games, and comics, artists are always on short supply, yet, ironically enough most are overworked and underpaid.
The truth is, there are not many people who can draw really well, especially take another person's idea, and put it on paper, but, because business executives, former business majors in college, types, are all douche bags, and see art as "doodling on paper," a lot of places don't pay them very well. Even in Japan, a culture that accepts illustration as a means of communication, a place that posseses a large talent pool of artists, they tend to be underpaid. There are not a whole lot of people in the world that can do what they do, and without artists, capitalism just would not function.
Overworked, and underpaid; that is the life of an artist that draws professionally.
If you want good pay, and experience with comics, you'll probably have to contact D.C. or Marvel, ask what they want, and then work on getting an art degree specializing in comics. To be a comic book artist, also, you need to be the type of artist who can see something in their head vividly, and then draw it, just as vividly. There are people who can do still life very well, and there are people who invent their own "still life" in their head. Which one are you? Because its the second type, that can get into comics. Still though if you can get away with it, don't sell yourself short; again, there are not a lot of people who can do what you do if you're good, so you should get a lot of pay for working hard for someone.
