Apparently the majority of thoughts that occur to us in a day are negative; this comes naturally. It takes discipline and practice to do otherwise. Every thought or statement we make is an affirmation which leaves a mark on our subconscious mind.
Repeating them regularly will reinforce them and eventually our subconscious will take these as truth. Consequently, our brain will strive to achieve what it thinks is a fact. Hence, it is better to have thoughts which encourage us to build our self esteem and achieve our goals.
These affirmations can be positive or negative. Negative affirmations do not help us in any way. They make our mind believe in things that are not helpful to our personality in any way. For instance, a negative affirmation will make you believe that you will fail in any task even before you begin. Contrary to this, a positive affirmation is always encouraging and builds your confidence to take on any task in the world.
