A format will erase EVERYTHING, so if you have an external hard drive, backup everything in there. It will also erase your operating system as well. If you reformat, your computer won't have an OS to boot from.
If your computer is manufactured one like DELL/Compaq/HP/Gateway, your computer may have come with a system restore disk that will do the reformat for you and install everything exactly as it was when you brought it home. If it doesn't come with this disc, many times you can buy it from the manufacturer. If your computer is an Acer, there is an option using Acer eRecovery Service to restore it to the Factory Defaults. Your Acer may also have come with a recovery disk, which you can restore using using the eRecovery Service.
1. Insert your manufacturer restore disk or Operating System disk
2. When you initially turn on the computer enter the boot menu, change the boot sequence to have the CD-ROM boot first rather than the Hard Drive and follow the instructions.
You can use programs such as Active@ KillDisk found at killdisk.com These programs are available in case you don't have an Operating System disk available to you or you are throwing your hard drive away and don't want your data out there possibly in the wrong hands. Boot n Nuke is another piece of free software that can format and erase your hard drive over and over again.
1.Go to dban.org 2.Click "Download" 3.Click "for CD and DVD media" 4.Burn the downloaded file to CD/DVD with an ISO burning software like infrarecorder which is free to download at infrarecorder.org. 5.Insert the disc and reboot the machine. 6.If your PC is set to boot from the CD/DVD drive first, it should boot dban. If not press F8 or F12 then select DVD drive. 7.Your PC should load the disc and then follow the instructions on the screen. Formatting may take some time but it is well worth it because it erases data a few times to a standard where no data is recoverable.
If you have an operating system on a disk such as Windows, just place it into the drive and boot up your system. When it asks to format your hard drive, select "yes". This will remove all files on your hard drive and put the new operating system files onto your hard drive.
If you don't have an operating system disk, you'll need to get a hold of one. While in DOS mode, you can type FORMAT C: (assuming your hard drive still has the default drive letter "C:") to completely erase your hard drive. But, without that operating system, you'll just have a blank hard drive and won't be able to boot up your computer without a boot disk (i.e. operating system disk).
Important Note: Save your important files to a disk, make sure you have all the drivers for all you hardware then you format(erase) and reload the OS(Windows, Mac)
I am NOT a techie, but here are some basics that I think are ok as far as they go. I just had to do this with my older but still serviceable Toshiba laptop. First, save anything and everything you want to separate media or you may lose it forever. If you do a backup thinking that after you re-install your system you can restore from the backup, you may not be able to do it. Then, use the disk you got with the system to clear everything on the system and restore to 'new'. You then want to make sure that any system updates that are available are installed and running.
There are two ways;
1. On some computers like HP you can restore the computer by using restore discs, you burn a disc/s from a built in program on your computer and then reboot your computer, boot the computer to the disc/s and follow the steps. If your computer does not have that you can use the other way.
2. You can buy (if your computer is a PC) a new windows installation disc (this the expensive way) and install windows from the disc again.

When you upgrade the memory of a computer more applications can be run simultaneously. This will make the computer seem to run faster, almost like a brand new computer.

No, it will make it faster. Unless your computer is old.
It depends on if your computer has something wrong with it. If it is brand new, then no. But, if you have been using your computer for awhile, then utilities can enhance performance.

You will have to format you hard drive and re-install ME from scratch. Make sure you have backed up all of your data as this will be destroyed during a format
No diskdefragmenter cannot be used to format a partion. It is used to make all the files to get fragmented. Formatting of partition can be done by using disk management option in the computer management
