A cold-sore is apparently caused by the 'Herpes Simplex' virus and usually contracted via saliva or actually making contact with the erupted sore and transferring to the mouth! It can be sparked through stress, hormones or a sudden change in body temperature. As viruses thrive in heat, the best treatment I have found is the application of ice to the affected area, as soon a tingle is felt. If the sore has erupted, dose orally with Lysine Powder and apply Manuka Honey to the sore( both available from local health-shops ).

Cold sores are commonly passed on by being kissed during child hood by some one that has cold sores. They can be passed to the mouth with out ever having any thing to do with sex.

There is a small chance of getting them by sharing utensils and drinks with some one that has a visible cold sore. But it's more likely to be passed by kissing some one on the mouth while they have a cold sore.

You get a cold sore by coming into direct contact with the virus (such as kissing).
