Various ways to remove nail polish

  • Depending on the color of the clothing, try nail polish remover if it doesn't come out soak the stained are in the polish remover for a minute or two and then machine wash.
  • It depends on the material. If it's some of the synthetics you're out of luck. You can try a little acetone. If that doesn't eat the material you should be able to pull most of the polish out. If that doesn't work, you can try a little paint stripper, but again, that might eat the material.
  • After testing for colorfastness on a hidden spot, sponge over the stain with pure acetone, available at beauty-supply shops and drugstores. Then launder the shirt as you normally would. Never use acetone on fabrics that contain triacetate or acetate (check care labels), because it can dissolve the cloth. For those, use amyl acetate, available at drugstores.
  • Try bug spray, Off Skintastic, Motsenbocker's Lift Off #3, or a can of acetone (and some Oxy Clean for washing afterward). I tried the bug repellent on one spot of the comforter and then Motsenbocker's on another. The bug repellent seemed to lighten the stain, but the Motsenbocker's was actually LIFTING the stain off of the fabric, so I switched to that. I had to spray, blot, and rub the spot with a soft-bristled toothbrush about 25-30 times, but IT COMPLETELY CAME OUT.If you use Motsenbocker's make sure you have a towel or something absorbent under whatever you are cleaning to catch the stain dripping through from the other side! if this doesn't work try the bug spray!
  • Use OFF!, Aeroguard or a similar bug/insect repellent - Place some paper towel under the stain or between layers of fabric if treating clothing. Spray well onto the stain and then brush stain to loosen and lift it with a soft toothbrush or something similar, spray again and repeat. It takes a little while. the stain can be dabbed with damp paper towel in between however this will remove dried nail polish without staining. Weird but true!
  • PUT SOME HYDROGEN PEROXIDE ON A PAPER TOWEL AND LAY IT ON THE RED STAIN THAN PUT SEVERAL BOOKS ON TOP OF THE TOWEL AND LET IT SIT FOR AWHILE.
  • Try and remove with acetone then wash as normal
  • Soak Item In Plenty Of Polish Remover Until Clean :) Or Just Saturate That Area With Polish Remover.
  • My teenage daughter had put a bottle of fingernail polish in our cart at Wal-Mart and when we were going through the store, it fell out and broke and this melon colored polish splattered on her black Ugg boots and all over the lower leg of my expensive jeans....I read the answser on here about bug spray and used OFF SKINTASTIC and a fingernail brush....I saturated the areas and let set for about 10 minutes, used the brush to scrub it and it all came off.....I was amazed and wish I had known that a few years ago when I got it on my comforter. I had used Goo Gone first and it did nothing...even though it's supposed to take off paint, tar, etc. What a money saver this tip has been.

Unless the fabric is acetate, triacetate or modacrylic, you can use nail polish remover. Start by testing it in a small corner of the fabric to see if it is color-safe. Then use it on the stain. Rinse the nail polish remover out of the fabric when you are done.

Acetone -the main ingredient in finger nail polish remover can be purchased at most paint stores- I would apply acetone to the sheets-let soak and vigorously rub stain until the polish disolves and then wash separately in the washer- or in the kitchen sink
