How can you heal a hamster's broken leg? |
[Edit] |
Answer
Take him to an exotics vet. Depending on the severity of the break, the vet might wrap it up, perhaps with a splint, or have to do surgery, or simply give pain medication (meloxicam and carprofen are used) and tell you to keep him from excessive activity. You should then take everything out of his cage that he can climb on, and give him soft bedding to burrow in so he doesn't go crazy from boredom, until the leg heals.
Also, if you have a wire wheel, either replace it with a plastic wheel with a solid running surface, or cover the outside of the wheel with cardboard to provide a solid surface. Wire wheels are known to cause breaks.
Answer
Be sure to isolate him from any other hamsters and keep his food and water supply fresh. If it is severely broken, go see a vet.
Answer
Take him to a vet right away! There should really be no need to isolate him/her from any other hamsters because golden hamsters fight a lot. The only hamsters that don't fight are dwarf hamsters. Do not try to do anything to the leg yourself, the hamster will probably bite. Gently scoop him into a ventilated box and rush him to a vet right away.
Answer
Take him to a vet. If you know where the break is, you can try dulling the ends of a toothpick and making a splint. Provide vitamins and other extra-healthy forms of nutrition.
Answer
My boyfriend accidently stepped on my hamsters leg while my hamster was running around my bedroom :( We rushed him to the vet and the vet told us that the leg would heal on it's own. He said my hamster did not need a splint, because he would try to wriggle out of it. The vet also said that hamsters have cartlidge not bone (just like rats and mice) so it would take a few weeks for it to heal. He suggested giving him extra vitamins and keeping him from climbing and running on it.
- NOTE: The information above is incorrect. Hamsters, rats, and mice do not have cartilage instead of bone, that is a myth. They have bones just like other mammals. If you want to verify this, just do an online search for rat x-ray and you will see x-rays showing a rats' bones.
Answer
Take one table spoon of salt, half a table spoon of turmeric powder (this is a yellow powder used in asian cuisine) add half a cup water and heat it gently on low fire, when the mixture thickens take an old peice of rag or bandage clothe and mix with the rest of the mixture. when it is luke warm wrap this rag round the broken leg with a little pressure. this bandage will dry quickly because of the salt in it. Leave it for 2-3 days or until the hamster starts walking without any difficulty. You can also wet the bandage twice daily with the rest of the mixture after heating it again to make it a liquid form. I tired this on a broken leg of a one month old chick and it worked.
