How can you help people with dementia? In: Mental Health |
[Edit] |
Answer
unfortunately there is no clear cut answer to helping someone with dementia. It really depends on what stage of dementia the person is in. Stabilty and routine would probably be a few things that are important during all stages of dementia. Ecouraging and allowing the person to do as much as possible for themselves for as long as possilbe is important for many reasons. Dignity is an important one. Knowing when to get help is important too. I think every couple vows never to let each end up in a care facitlity. But, sometimes a person reaches a level of dementia that 24 hour supervision is necessary due to the health and safety of all parties involved. In that case, research and drop in visits are the only way to find the right environment for you loved one. Don't be afraid to visit anytime of the day and show up unannounced, this is a good way to get a feel for the way things really are.
