Most metaphysical bookstore have a notice board where you may find postings for Pagan gatherings, this might be a good place to start.
Do not be taken in by the "trappings" of "flash" of those you meet. Trust your own instincts to find someone who is honest and trustworthy.
If all else fails you can do some of the research yourself. There are a large number of very good books out there to start you on your way, however, you will do best if you are taught by someone. If you are looking for book, anything by Scott Cunningham, Ray Buckland, Amber K, or even Starhawk are excellent starts. Read carefully, take only what you feel comfortable with and ask as many questions as you feel you need to.
