The short answer is - Yes. The good news is that it's easier than you might think and the rewards are far greater than through any other "publishing" method.

But there are lots of vanity publishers out there calling themselves "self publishing" companies. But that's and oxymoron.

You are "self publishing" if and only if you OWN the company that is doing the publishing.

Self publishing is not some service that anyone (individual or company) can provide for a writer. It just doesn't work that way.

Self-publishing means you have already published the book yourself, so sending it to a publisher would be submitting it for traditional publishing, not self-publishing. Publishers typically prefer unpublished manuscripts. However, you can query publishers about your work or use your self-published book as a portfolio of your writing.

Yes; however, you may have already short yourself in the foot if your self-published book has sold zero to few copies.

Publishers are in business to publish books that will SELL. And it's your job as the author to sell your books.

If you have a self-published book that is selling well, publishers may even contact you with an offer. They don't really care where or how they find salable material.

But the first and foremost thing that any writer should worry about is writing a really good manuscript.

For that; aspiring writers must learn the correct technology of writing effective fiction. All other considerations take a distant backseat to learning how to Write-Better-Fiction.

One great option for self-publishing is to publish an ebook. These are less expensive and can provide great exposure.

Those days are long gone. Anyone can be a publisher without any business behind them. Services such as Amazon kdp and IngramSpark allow you to self - publish both eBooks and print books.

Do remember that publishing is not the same as selling and that takes marketing skills and resources to promote your new book to readers.

Do you pay for a book to get published or does the publisher?

Generally, a publisher pays you for the rights to publish your book. A publisher takes on all costs of publication and pays the author based on the contract signed. Self-published authors generally have to pay all production costs associated with publishing (binding, advertising, etc.), but reap all of the profit. Self published authors usually keep all the primary and subsidiary publishing rights to their own work, and sign up with what's called a 'non-exclusive' contract, meaning they can enter into agreements with other publishers, traditional or otherwise, at the same time as publishing their book with the self publishing company. This arrangement is said to give self published authors more flexibility. A good example of a book publishing company that uses a non-exclusive contract is Schiel & Denver, which also pays 50% net royalties on copies sold in all formats.
