It takes a while to get the rich sound that you want to hear out of the cello, don't get discouraged!!
first you have to get the cello then try just to play with it then use your amber to tighten the bow WARNING :do not touch the horse hair on the bow anyway when you tighten the bow while doing that sing peaunut butter sandwich and keep a rhythem and if you want to sing a funny song sing grandma rides a motorcicle. then do the same tune but play the bow with the cello this time if you keep doing that you'll be a pro
Teaching yousellf to play cello is a bad idea. But if you have tuner you can check if your fingers are at the right pitch and you could get books for teaching. I suggest essential elements for strings. I, being a cello and violin player, suggest getting a tutor.
I have been playing the cello since I was 6, and I am 13 now, and it is amazing to play. It is a little tricky at first because you must get used to stretching your fingers, but it is smooth sailings from there. Being in grade nine, you get the more tricky stuff, and I will be going to University for the fine arts, which to be honest, is a little scary, because some songs that I play already are hard. But overall, I strongly recommend the cello, it is a fun instrument and orchestras would be lost without cellos and basses keeping the tempo.

I've played the cello for about 2 years and I'm one of the few that learns this fast... compared to other pupils that is. I'd like to add on to what the other user said (because his answer is more opinion-based than fact-based). The cello is definitely more rewarding because of the thumb positions and various challenges like playing in tenor and treble clef. The orchestra would not necessarily be "lost" but it will definitely have a harder time playing pieces. Remember just because violins get the melody doesn't mean cellos are bad instruments. They have impressive solos like elgar and bach. So again choose the mellow quality of the cello over the sharp quality of the violin.

Hey guys i have also played the cello since 6th grade because i started late. I was horrible but the very next year i had this amazing cello that i loved. I am now the 2nd best cello in my high school orchestra so i think its a matter of the feel of the cello.
Most cello pieces make use of a bow, which is is used rather like a violin bow to vibrate the strings. However, like a violin, it is also possible to play pizzicato i.e. plucking the strings two thirds of the way down the fingerboard with the tips of the fingers with your thumb on the side of it.
You can use your hands, (I think) Or use a Bow designed for a cello. It also works for a Violin
