Females have short fins compared to males apart from the wild species and the plakat and halfmoon plakat.

Females have an ovipositor; a white raised bump just behind the ventral fins.

The ventral fins are usually shorter.

They display vertical bars when stressed which aren't as visible on males.

They show horizontal bars, usually called breeding stripes when keen to mate.
