How can you tell if an egg is bad from the outside before hard boiling it?

[Edit]

Answer

You can candle it by shining a bright light behind it and looking through it to see if the yolk is intact. The other method is to put it in water and see if it sinks. If it floats it means it is bad and should be thrown away.
