In a blood smear cells are spread out in one thin layer so they can be easily identified through a microscope. Normal red blood cells look round, whereas sickle cells are spindle or crescent shaped.

a CBC is going to detect the amounts of different cells in the body, its a Complete Blood Count- this included white, red, platelets and so forth. It can tell if the cells are big or the cells are small as well, but the best test for sickle cell is a blood smear. This test is merely taking the blood, smearing it on a slide and taking a look with a microscope. This will show possible sickling of the cells and most other morphological variations of RBCs that come from other diseases.

Would a karyotype reveal the presence of a sickle-cell disease why or why not?

From my own opinion:I believe that a Karotype would NOT reveal the presence of sickle-cell disease because a karotype only shows pictures of all the chromosomes in a cell..But sickle-cell disease causes red blood cells to become sickle-shaped. So, basically, it involves red blood cells, not chromosomes.
