How do you know if your dog is going to die?

I had to put my dog to sleep this past weekend and I am heartbroken. I keep calling her name in the middle of the night. I owed this to her even though it tore me to pieces. My baby died in my arms and she took a piece of me with her last breath. I will never forget the peacefulness and beauty that surrounded her. She looked like she was a healthy and happy dog when she died which will always stay in my heart. She looked so beautiful that I couldn't accept that she was gone; her beautiful eyes stared into my soul just the same way that she stared at me during her last days.

I thought that she was going to die when we were in the car...she was panting/breathing really hard as if she just ran a marathon; she was breathing really hard the night before. She had been acting weird for over one month...she would distance herself from all of us, she would go out in the rain to use the bathroom and please note that this is odd because there is no way that she would go outside in the rain before. She wouldn't respond to us as if she was deliberately trying to tune us out. The only thing she could do was eat...her passion in life was eating...I believe that eating does not say anything in regards to how sick your baby is; it all depends on the dog. However, she refused the fillet Mignon the hour before we were leaving.

She started giving me this really penetrating stare two nights before she died. This stare pulled on my heart strings, and I will never forget those beautiful eyes. The Vet wanted to keep her on pain killers and anti-inflammations, but she seemed SO unhappy. She was constantly isolating herself in corners.

I loved her SO much that I was willing to sacrifice losing her to end her suffering. I will never forget how much she kissed me the night before we took her in. She kissed me for over 30 minutes even though she could not breath.

I will always love her!! I will never forget her. I am a mess and ALL I DO EVERY NIGHT IS WAIT FOR HER TO COME IN MY DREAMS AND TELL ME THAT SHE IS OKAY.

I "joined" (poor choice of words given the circumstances, sadness of the situation etc) but I Really, Truly felt drawn to you and your story. One day I may be able to tell you mine. At this time, however, I wanted you to know that I once had a Pomeranian named Babie, and I loved...still do love...her with all of my heart and soul. I constantly find myself slipping back through time just looking over the beloved memories of how she stood by me, over me, loving me, kissing me while in the hardest times of my life. How NO MATTER WHAT she was there for me. I can so deeply appreciate what you wrote and I had t let you know that it touched me and even helped me feel better. You didn't simply answer my question, I finally felt as if someone really did know where I was coming from. And I need to thank you from the bottom of my broken, but now thanks to you, finally beginning to mend, heart for taking the time to share. You also added to my lifelong belief that we are all a part of a much larger, much closer brotherhood, tied by our common experiences as much as by our common Biology as anything else! You have at the very least turned med in the direction of peace and I want to thank you for that.

There are various signs that may indicate that your dog is dying. Some of the warning signs include total loss of appetite, lack of coordination, mental confusion, incontinence and excessive vomiting among others.

Unfortunatly my vet said that when a dog is nearing the end of their life a bunch of things start to occur all a once w/ the dog. My dog is 14 years old and I have had her half my life. Recently I noticed that she had dropped a bunch of weight. To the point that her ribs were showing. Upon noticing this I checked her teeth and realized her teeth were all broken and decaying. Thus, she could not chew the hard dog food that is given to my dogs daily. Then she started not being able to hold her bladder. She was a dog that never went to the bathroom in the house to urinating in her sleep on her bed. Then about 3 weeks ago she was following me around the house and upon further inspection I noticed that her eyes were closed and one eye seemed to be very swollen. Found out from the vet that she had had glacouma due to her cataracts and sometime stress and age can cause glacouma to flare up and a lot of fluid will enter the eye and not exit causing it to swell. Once a dogs eye swells, they will most likely be blind in that eye if you do get the swelling down. So, this is when the vet explained to me that her having all these symptoms and problems meant that she was nearing the end of her life. He said that when dogs get close they go hard and fast and things snowball w/ them. But, luckily w/ a diet of boiled chicken and canned dog food I was able to bring her weight back up. Older dogs lack protein and the boiled chicken provides this. She is now almost back to her normal weight, the swelling in her eye went down and I am proud to say she is still here w/ us. I have to deal w/ her bladder problem, but that is worth it to me to still have her by my side. Pay close attention to your senior dog so you can recognize symptoms the minute they appear and can do something about it. If you don't pay attention then you could lose them sooner than they could have lived. I now check her everyday and she always comes looking for me at feeding time because she knows she gets the "good" stuff at dinner time. But, remember, if your dog is still eating they are not in any pain. Alot of people put their dogs down before they really need to be. My vet says that as long as they eat everyday they are fine to still be here.

You could probally tell by the dogs actions. They may be less active, not eat at all or very little, any thing that would seem strange for a dog to do that seems weak or over tired, may be tell tale signs of death or disease

It's quit easy to tell if your dog is deing one way is that that dog will actually tell you. What I mean is the dog will like put it's paw on you or something just something to show that it's telling you.

Sometimes you don't know - a sudden infection, a latent tumor or severe trauma can all kill your dog before you realize something is wrong. However, dogs that die of "old age" (usually organ failure or progressive cancer) will show signs they are declining. This often includes decreased appetite, decreased energy, spending more time lying around and sleeping, having less interest in favorite toys or activities and generally appearing to be "winding down".
