There are too many symptoms to name for every illness a dog might get, so the simplest answer is, if your dog starts acting like itself, or differing from its normal routine, then its better to be safe than sorry and take him or her to the vets.

A little detail:Before obvious symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea appear, loss of energy, loss of appetite, excessive thirst or drinking less than normal are all common early signs that your dog isn't well.

and also if it seems kind of down then you know it is sick. Plusu cannot let any animal suffer so what you do is take your pet to the vet and they will put your pet 2 sleep because it is sad and not good 2 let an animal suffer. i know it's sad but it's true

First thing, look at his appetite. Does your dog eat well? If he is not eating, or drinking water very often it could mean there is something wrong. Also look at his breathing. Is he breathing too fast or looks like he is having difficult breathing? If your dog is not active and just wants to lay round, that could be another sign somethings wrong, and if the dogs nose is dry that could be a sign that you dog has a cold or isn't feeling well!:(

AnswerIf your dog is not active or you suspect he/she is unwell, please take him/her to the vet.

The first thing you will notice is that your dog will stop eating. This will cause dehydration and that will start a chain reaction of any of a hundred symptoms. So if you notice any strange behavior from your dog, this could be a sign of something.

You will know that your dog had enough to eat by how it reacts. Make sure

(s)he takes a small nap, eats about 8 small portions of food a day, depending on the gender, breed, age, and capability/ discapacities it has, drinks more water than it eats, and walks around in two ways: strolling and energetic, but not neccesarily at the same time.

Your veterinarian can give you a solid rating of your dog's body condition score (BCS), but you can estimate this at home by looking at three areas. First, look at your dog from the side - a healthy weight dog will have the last one or two ribs barely visible as slight bumps at the back of his chest cavity. An underweight dog will have more ribs visible. Second, look at the abdomen from the side - in a healthy weight dog it should sweep upwards with the narrowest "tuck" just in front of the knee of the back leg. An underweight dog will have a more pronounced tuck. Third, look at the dog's back from the top - a healthy weight dog will have the widest portion at the level of the last rib, with a slight "tuck" at the waist in front of the back leg. An underweight dog will have a pronounced waist, and the pointy bones along the top of the spinal column will be pronounced.

Your vet should be able to provide this information, but there is a way to figuring it out by yourself...

Look at the side of your dog. Can you see his/her ribs? If you can, your dog needs to eat more. If you can feel the ribs when placing your hands on them, but you cannot see them, then your dog has healthy eating habits. If you can't see or feel the dog's ribs, then your dog is eating to much.

Dogs should have some body fat, but not an excessive amount. A healthy weight for a dog should have a distinct "tuck" or "waist" in his abdomen, after his rib cage but before his hip bones, when seen from above. When seen from the side, the belly should tuck upward from the rib cage towards the hip bones. You should be able to see the last rib bone and be able to feel the last three rib bones with gentle finger pressure.

A dog is too thin when you can clearly see more than just the tips of the hip bones, the bumps on the tail bones, more than 2 rib bones or the ridge running down the middle of the shoulder blade.

If you aren't sure whether or not your dog is too thin, you can make an appointment with a veterinarian to have a professional examination. Often, loss of body weight can be a sign of chronic disease like cancer.

When a dog has a healthy weight, you can feel his ribs easily. (Not SEE his ribs, FEEL his ribs. If you can see his ribs he's underweight.) If not, of course, he's overweight.
