Palpation is the term applied to the use of hands to feel for injury or otherwise aid in medical diagnosis. A break is fairly easy to spot when a person who has experience is making the call. A fracture isn't so easily found. And palpation may hurt. It might make more sense to get the injury looked at by someone who does that sort of thing professionally. Certainly in the case of a break it would be best to have it set by an M.D. to avoid complications and end up with a relatively good working digit after things are said and done.

- inability to move the body part
- immediate intense pain
- almost immediate swelling
- extreme bruising
- throbbing pain
A hairline fracture may not cause all these symptoms.
