Palpation is the term applied to the use of hands to feel for injury or otherwise aid in medical diagnosis. A break is fairly easy to spot when a person who has experience is making the call. A fracture isn't so easily found. And palpation may hurt. It might make more sense to get the injury looked at by someone who does that sort of thing professionally. Certainly in the case of a break it would be best to have it set by an M.D. to avoid complications and end up with a relatively good working digit after things are said and done.

you can tell that your finger is broken by noticing if you hear your finger bone crack and notice blood coming out.
If it swollen, painful if you try to move it and it feels quite numb.

You should go to your doctor or to the emergency room. An X-ray will have to be done to determine whether or not your hand has been fractured.

if your scaphoid is fractured then just be careful to not bend your hand back or use that hand to get up. my wrist is splinted right now for a scaphoid fracture--ow!
