How to tell if your mare is pregnant
The best way is to take her to the vet, unless your vet makes house calls, like ours does. He or she will put one of those extra long gloves so he can check internally in her vaginal canal (on site,) and take a blood sample for testing.
I have heard that some people have used a human pregnancy test which works in some animals to detect the pregnancy hormone. Shouldn't be too hard to get the stick into your mare's urine stream since the tend to spread out (their version of human squatting, I guess,) their back legs and stretch their bodies a bit when they urinate. If she doesn't mind you being close to her while she urinates, that is. Some mares are picky about that.
And be sure to get the feed made for pregnant mares so she gets all of the correct vitamins & minerals she needs, although I've known folks that just keep their mares on their normal diet while they are pregnant and their mares seemed to be okay. But just like in humans she may need extra vitamins & minerals, especially calcium since mammals tend to lose a lot of calcium during pregnancy, which can weaken the bones.
As far as riding...I've known a lot of people that will ride their mares until they start to get really big. Light exercise is probably okay but consult with your vet on that one since every case is different. Plus he/she can recommend the best diet for your mare.
And congrats to you if your horse turns out to be "in the family way." Always a joy when our animals bring another life into the world, be it horses and cows...or chickens and ducks. Dogs and cats are another matter since there is so much overpopulation with them, but that's another story.
Good luck!!
