Gold is is much denser than brass (given the same volumesof the two metals gold is much heavier)
Gold will not tarnish when exposed to most acids such as acetic acid (vinegar). phosphoric acid (Coca Cola) or alkali such as dish washing detergent.
Gold is much heavier then brass
Brass is a mixture of copper and zinc, while nickel is an element.
1. Gold is denser than brass: weigh the object, and determine its volume (e.g. by measuring the displacement when it is sunk into water in a graduated cylinder). Calculate the density. Gold will come out near 19.4 grams/cubic centimetre; brass near 8.6 g/cm3. 2. Rub against the unglazed ceramic object, real gold leave gold streak brass plated will leave brass streak.

Well, the difference between gold and gold overlay, is that the gold 24k it is pure yellow gold metal; and yellow gold alloys it is 22k thru 10k Rhodium Plated. But is not white gold plated. Because it is yellow gold alloy's include copper, and Rhodium plated. That it is gold overlay.

The brass has much lighter color (yellowish to light reddish), then the copper (reddish brown). The brass is copper mixed with zinc. The more copper in the mix, the darker the color.

Well, first they take brass, then they stamp "28k gold" on it, knowing that anyone who thinks you can go higher than 24k (pure gold) is probably unfamiliar enough with gold to be able to tell the difference between brass and gold. You don't see even 24k gold jewelry often; it's too soft and doesn't wear well. Jewelry is usually made of a lower gold content alloy (with, usually, copper, silver, and/or nickel) that's substantially more durable than pure gold is.
Fake gold, or "fools gold" has a foul sulfur odor while real gold does not. Usually, you can rub the gold and sniff it to determine if it is real or fake.
If the coin is made from gold, it will say so on the packaging it was sold in.
