what will be a sign that my cat in labor
SUPPOSEDLY the cat will call to you and will start going in and out of its bed, and doing a lot of licking of her vagina.
I say "supposedly" because I brought a pregnant stray in once. She decided to eat while she gave birth...so I'm sitting there catching kittens and pulling the afterbirth out while the damn cat has her head in the food bowl...every once in a while I'd turn the mother around, show her the kitten I just caught, she'd wash it off, eat the placenta (they all do this, it's disgusting but necessary because there are LOTS of vitamins in it), let the kitten nurse for a few minutes, then she'd get back up and start eating just in time for ANOTHER kitten to fall out.
When she was done with the birthing process she did settle down and let them feed, and she was a real good mother...but you would have never suspected it from that little performance.
One of the signs that a cat is going into labor is a change in its behavior by either being reclusive or affectionate. She may also start nesting. She will also show signs of restlessness and pacing and will lick her genitalia frequently.
You will obviously be able to see a difference in the size of their "stomach." You might also notice that they become more affectionate or even lazy. A cats nipples probably will become harder from the early ages of pregnancy.
When a cat goes into labour it will go to a place where it feels alone, like under your bed. You may start to hear it howling. Theres no way to tell when exactly it will give birth unless you go to the vet they can give you a rough estimate of when it will happen.
She will act nervious, possible panting. She may go lie in a litter box. Right before the birthing starts, she may move (if indoors) to a higher location such as a bed or desk.
She is lying down and she's huffing, looking strained. She also could be panting.
She is pacing around trying to find a good place, you can feel the kittens inside her extremely round belly, etc.
yes. your cat could be in labor for 36 hours and be fine.
Only a Vet, with medication, could induce labor in a cat. Cats are natural mothers and will go into labor when the time is right.
