In the United States, Congress has required that major TV stations broadcast only digital signals beginning on 14 June 2009. TV and radio broadcasting begin with analog signals and older televisions are capable of receiving only analog signals. If your TV is receiving over-the-air signals (not via cable or satellite dish) and it is not digital capable or equipped with a digital conversion box, it will seem as if your VHF and UHF television signals have gone away. A conversion box can be purchased in many stores for $40-$60 or so, and up to two government coupons per household are available to cover $40 of that.

You need a VHF radio antenna, a VHF radio receiver and of course a station broadcasting on the VHF frequency.
Doing a mayday call over VHF is still the most common way to make a distress signal, however now all VHF sets have a DSC button which when hit send out an automatic distress signal to all receivers in range with location and distress information.
VHF is "line of sight" communication only, as the signal travels in a straight line (like visible light). A taller antenna will be able to "see further" over the horizon and thus have longer range.

FM stations are assigned to a part of the VHF band. VHF only travels in straight lines. It cannot follow the earth's curvature or get past mountains. That limits the range. Its not FM thats the issue, but the assigned transmitter frequencies.
