How comfortable are sportbikes? In: Motorcycles |
Answer
Here's the response to "How comfortable is that leaning forward posture, especially if you are on there an hour or more? Is much of the weight of your torso braced on your arms?" from Timberwoof of Timberwoof's Motorcycle FAQ:
"Different models have different amounts of forward lean and different foot peg position (also important for comfort). Your comfort on a particular bike depends on the length of your arms/legs, the position of the various controls, your physical condition, and how you sit. At speeds of 45+ mph the wind supports you quite a bit. I can ride all day at freeway speeds on my VFR but the VFR has a relatively mild lean and low foot pegs compared with say a Ducati 996 or a GSXR-750."
Answer
The real sport bikes aren't that comfortable, because it's not about the comfort, it's about the performance. The so called "naked" or "standard" bikes are more comfortable.

It also depends on where you're sat. I went from Skipton in Yorkshire to the top end of Aberdeen on the back of a Suzuki TL1000 and regretted agreeing to do it after about 75 miles. My bum went sooo numb which was fine till we stopped. I thought it had gone back to normal so we set off again. After that I couldn't manage more than 30/40 miles without stopping to give my rump a rest. My partner though, who was driving, said I was a wimp and he couldn't understand it as he was really comfy and had no aching limbs. So as you see if you're on the back it is not as comfy and I wouldn't recommend it on a sport bike for long distances unless you are used to it. If you're planning any holidays or any long distance travelling then go out for long rides on the bike a few times beforehand to get used to sitting for a while. Or find a partner who doesn't mind stopping every 30 miles for your bum J
