During WWII, unless a dive bomber could set off secondary explosions inside the carrier; as one did to the USS Princeton...torpedoes are always the best way to sink any ship.
Another words, as one USN torpedo pilot stated, "if you wanna fill the ship with air, you bomb it; if you wanna fill it with water...you torpedo it!"
