A real "bullet" has a distinct projectile ("bullet") attached to the front of the cartridge, while with a blank, the brass cartridge is simply crimped closed. If you're not sure, don't use it - ask someone who knows.

Agree with the answer immediately above. In regard to the FIRST answer, while a blank cartridge does not have a bullet (the projectile part of a cartridge) people HAVE been killed or badly injured by blank cartridges. They will produce a very high pressure jet of gas that can hurt you quite badly at close range.
