Danger is in the eye of the beholder. Millions of people whitewater raft without incident, however there is danger involved. There is also lots of misinformation out there concerning accident/fatality rates and rafting. Many of the statistics do not distinguish between commercially guided trips, and self guided trips. (Commercially guided has a much better record.)
According to American Whitewater, statistically there is one death per 250,000 - 400,000 users days (1 day of the activity) for commercial rafting. According to the statistics I've seen, this is about twice as high as skiing, and half as high as cycling.
Relative danger increases or decreases by:
The fitness level of the participant, and their propensity to panic
The difficulty of the river
The temprature of the water
The quality and presence of gear and safety equipment
How accesable to EMS one is (i.e. roadside vs. wilderness)
The level of the river (high water, medium, or low)
