"The Pearl" was first published in 1947, and it tells the story of a poor pearl diver named Kino who finds a valuable pearl that changes his life. The idea for the story came to Steinbeck after he spent time in the Gulf of California observing pearl divers and their way of life.
Up to a point it is a male version or take-off on the saga of the curse of the Hope Diamond. You can argue it both ways. Ultimately Kino ( which means movies in German!) throws the precious stone back into the sea- back to nature, one supposes. More than a little anti-capitalistic, rather like (the Necklace) or some of the variants thereof.
Steinbeck had several experiences that influenced him to write the Pearl. He was raised with modest means, as is reflected in the poverty of Kino and his family. His mother was also a teacher that loved literature and reading books, so he was raised in a pro-literature atmosphere.
The novella 'The Pearl,' begins in early morning at the home of Kino, a poor peasant. His son is stung by a scorpion and the family leaves to take him to the doctor.
John Steinbeck based The Pearl on an old Mexican folktale he heard during an expedition in the Sea of Cortez.
The lead character a fisherman from a Spanish-American community ( it is called La Paz in the story) accidentally discovers a giant pearl. It should be noted he is not a Pearl Diver, just a regular fisherman. that"s how the story begins. Stand by for some unusual plot twists!
Kino is poor and he wants money so he takes off with his ship looking for "THE PEARL" there's lots of conflict then he finds it and wants to sell it but every time someone gives him a price he wants more, which shows he is greedy.
To Start with, the book I just finished reading in class is called The Pearl by a fantastic author named John Steinbeck. His son gets sick, and Kino finds a giant pearl, which is seen as a sign of salvation for his family. Soon, the pearl corrupts Kino, as it reflects greed and unnecessary wealth. Kino throws the pearl away, deep into the ocean. story tells about how his discovery of the most wonderful pearl in the world shatters his happiness
