Bluetooth is a trademark. To use it a device must provide functionality corresponding to the bluetooth specification. As to why they picked that name, you would have to ask the people that developed the specification. Trademark names must be distinctive, this one sure is.

∙ 17y agoThe name Bluetooth was born from the 10th century king of Denmark, King Harold Bluetooth (whose surname is sometimes written as Bluetooh), who engaged in diplomacy which led warring parties to negotiate with each other. The inventors of the Bluetooth technology thought this a fitting name for their technology which allowed different devices to talk to each other.

King Blatand united warring factions in parts of what is now Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Bluetooth technology is designed to allow collaboration between differing industries such as the computing, mobile phone and automotive markets.

Moreover, Jim Kardach (who developed the idea of intercommunicating mobile phones with personal computers) was currently fond of reading history legend novels about Denmark, Norway, and King Harald who was noted by Danish legend as the king who united the dissonant Danish tribes.
