Because of Prohibition he was able to supply the product that many wanted and which the US Government had outlawed: Booze. Of course he also offered gambling, prostitution and protection all of which provided him with a large income.

Well like any other smart gangster of the era Al Capone always went about his business secretly or some times secretly. Al Capone ran side businesses to cover up his illegal bootlegging, gambling, smuggling, and prostitution rackets around Chicago. He ran side businesses like restaurants, Hotels, and stores he did this because regular people during the depression don't just make a million dollars a year so if he ran side businesses nobody would wonder where all the money was coming from. Unlike most gangsters Capone was very flamboyant and loved all the publicity he got, many other mafiosi liked to go about there business in absolute secret. I hope you found this helpful.
