During the time of Darwin and Wallace evolution would have gone against everything completely changing and shaking society, thus Darwin did not want to publish his book until after his death. Wallace however came up with almost the same idea as Darwin independently. When Darwin found out that Wallace had these ideas he published his book. So Darwin came up with the idea first but Wallace also came up with the same concept and published a book on it as well.
